The overarching goal of Australia’s development program is to partner with Indonesia to boost inclusive growth and productive jobs. It aims to do this by improving Indonesia’s competitiveness through strengthening the impact of Indonesia’s own resources. Australia Awards scholarships support human development for a productive and healthy society in Indonesia.
Long Term Awards are post graduate degree (Masters or PhD/Doctorate level) scholarships offered to the next generation of Indonesian leaders for development. Through study and research, recipients develop the skills and knowledge to drive change and help build enduring people-to-people links with Australians.
Applicants for Australia Awards in Indonesia Long Term Awards will be assessed for their professional and personal qualities, academic competence and, most importantly, their potential to impact on development challenges in Indonesia.
Category
Australia Awards Scholarships in Indonesia are offered in two main categories: ‘Targeted’ and ‘Non-targeted’.
Applicants from the Targeted category include:
- Candidates from our Geographic Focus Areas (GFAs): Aceh, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, North Maluku, Papua, and West Papua.
- Embassy partners: any candidate nominated by the Australian Embassy in Indonesia.
- Government of Indonesia agencies: any candidate from a central, provincial or local government agency excluding employees of state universities and state-owned enterprises.
Scholarships are for full-time study for a Master’s or Doctorate degree from Australian tertiary institutions. The scholarship provides up to nine months full-time language and academic preparation in Indonesia. Students must achieve satisfactory results in this training to be able to continue their scholarships.
Scholarship Entitlements:
Australia Awards in Indonesia are available for the following types of courses:
- Master degree courses
- Doctorate degree (PhD) programs
Benefit:
The following benefits generally apply (General) :
- full tuition fees
- return air travel—payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route
- establishment allowance—a once only payment as a contribution towards accommodation expenses, text books, study materials
- Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) – a fortnightly contribution to basic living expenses paid at a rate determined by the department.
- Introductory Academic Program (IAP)—a compulsory program prior to the commencement of formal academic studies covering information on living and studying in Australia
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award (for award holder only)—provided to cover the scholar's basic medical costs (with the exception of pre-existing conditions)
- Pre-course English (PCE) fees—if deemed necessary PCE may be available for students for in-country and/or in-Australia training
- supplementary cademic support may be available to ensure a scholar's academic success or enhance their academic experience
- fieldwork (for research awards and Masters by coursework which have a research component where fieldwork is compulsory) may be available for eligible research students for one return economy class airfare via the most direct route to their country of citizenship or within Australia.
Requirements:
- Be an Indonesian citizen and be residing in and applying for the scholarship from Indonesia.
- Not be married or engaged to a person who is eligible to hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status, at any stage of the application, selection, mobilisation processes or while on-scholarship in Australia.
- Satisfy Australian Government requirements for international student entry to Australia (health, character etc).
- Not be applying for a visa to live in Australia.
- Not be applying for another long-term Australia Award unless they have resided outside Australia for twice the length of the total time that they were in Australia (for example, a previous Australia Awards Scholarship recipient in Australia for four years will not be eligible to apply for another Australia Awards Scholarship until they have resided outside Australia or back in Indonesia for eight years).
- Have satisfied any specific criteria established by Indonesia or government of Indonesia.
- Not be current serving military personnel.
- Be able to satisfy all requirements of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection for a DFAT student visa.
- Be able to satisfy the admission requirements of the Australian university at which the Scholarship is to be undertaken.
- Be applying for courses that fall within the areas of development priority (see “Priority Academic Area of Study” below).
- Have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.9. For applicants from GFAs and people with disabilities, have a GPA equal to or higher than 2.75.
- For Master’s applicants, have an English language proficiency of at least 5.5 in IELTS (or 525 in paper-based TOEFL or 69 in internet based TOEFL or 46 in PTE Academic). For applicants from GFAs and people with disabilities, have an English language proficiency of at least 5.0 in IELTS (or 500 in paper-based TOEFL or 59 in internet based TOEFL or 38 in PTE Academic).
- For PhD applicants, have an English language proficiency of at least 6.0 in IELTS (or 550 in paper-based TOEFL or 79 in internet based TOEFL or 54 in PTE Academic).
- The IELTS, TOEFL or PTE Academic result must be current (a test result obtained in April 30, 2018 until April 30, 2020 will be considered current). No other English language test (including TOEFL prediction test) results will be accepted.
- Provide contact details of test centre for verification of TOEFL test results.
- Include a minimum of one (1) copy of the original Institutional TOEFL test result.
- Already hold an undergraduate degree, if applying for a Masters.
- Already have a Masters, if applying for a Doctorate.
- Answer all relevant questions on the application form.
- Be willing and available to undertake full-time (Monday-Friday from 8 am to 4 pm) English for Academic Purposes (EAP) training in Indonesia prior to studying in Australia, if offered a scholarship.
- If applying for a Doctorate, applicants will be prioritised to staff of universities, higher education institutions, research institutes, key policy makers and targeted candidates in other agencies associated with DFAT activities.
- It is highly desirable for Doctorate applicants to have a letter of support from an Australian university for their proposed field of study.

Applicants must submit with their application all of the relevant supporting documents listed in the Scholarships Policy Handbook available at this link.
Photocopies of certified documents will not be accepted.
Applicants must also provide the following essential documents to meet the specific requirements for Indonesia. If at least one essential document is not provided, your application will be automatically rejected:
- copies of birth certificate or equivalent;
- proof citizenship i.e. KTP or your passport personal information pages;
- current Curriculum Vitae;
- official (certified*) post-secondary and tertiary certificates/degrees;
- official (certified*) post-secondary and tertiary transcripts of results;
- current (original) IELTS or TOEFL English language test results (a test result obtained from 30 April 2018 to 30 April 2020 will be considered current). The TOEFL prediction test is NOT accepted;
- Masters applicants must also attach certified DIII degree certificate/transcript if using DIV or S1 extension certificate/transcript;
- Doctorate applicants must also attach certified S1 degree certificate/transcript;
- academic reference from S2 supervisor for Doctorate candidates; and
- Doctorate and those Masters applicants whose study will include at least fifty percent research must fill the research proposal details on the application form.
- Applicants from Indonesia who apply online must also complete an Additional Information for Online Application (the form can be accessed on 1 February 2020).
- The official records department of the institution that originally issued the document/s; or
- Notary.
How To Apply:
Online applications
The followings are two steps to apply for the Long Term Awards (Australia Awards postgraduate scholarships):
- All applicants are required to apply online at OASIS website. Please read OASIS user guide for applicants to get more information about the OASIS.
- After applying at the OASIS website, applicants must also complete an Additional Information for Online Application.
- All applicants MUST read the Indonesia Country specific and eligibility requirement before applying for OASIS online application.
- Please watch these videos to get tips on how to apply for the Long Term Awards.
- When applying online, all essential supporting documents must be uploaded on OASIS to meet the specific requirements for Indonesia (please read the Long Term Awards Brochure).
- We recommend that the applicants submit their application early. The online application facility (OASIS) experiences peak usage in the days leading up to the closing date, and the applicants may experience delays in submitting the applications.
- For applicants that are unable to apply online via OASIS, may submit the application via hardcopy.
- Please note that we strongly encourage you to apply online via OASIS first and only apply via hardcopy when you are unable to apply online via OASIS.
- Hardcopy applications that consist of one (1) set of the application form and all essential supporting documents must be received by the closing date at the Australia Awards Office.
